[CGE team member Darcie had a bit of fun this weekend with her camera and her son's Star Wars Clones... and after laughing along with her as I watched the images flash by on her facebook page I thought what fun it would be to share them with all of you. After all, what coach doesn't need a bit of comic relief in the middle of the competition season! Make sure to read her captions... she judges the Clones' show picture by picture... -Catina]

This week's fun idea was sent to us by reader Heidi Zarder, coach of the Hamilton High School Synergy Color Guard from Sussex, Wisconsin! Thank you Heidi for taking the time to share your fun idea with the CGE Community! Heidi plans a night of fun JUST for the guard parents! I think this is a FANTASTIC idea! Here's what she wrote:
"To get the parents to know one another in order to recognize each another at football games & competitions we host a parents-only dinner. It's gotten too big for my house therefore one of the parents "hosts". I bring several lasagna's, alfredo shells, tiramisu & cheesecake... Part way through the evening the guard captains show up to thank parents for their support (we hand out something for them to wave or shake in the stands and each guard member writes a thank you note to their parents)...We have time for questions & answers with the coach (and band director) and the rest of the evening is spent talking about "the kids"."
I love this idea for so many reasons... |

This morning we came across an article in Entertainment Weekly that mentioned the well-known and beloved Riverside Community College Marching Band program from Riverside, California. For those not familiar with RCC's program they are the program that includes the world-renowned Fantasia winter guard - a long time favorite of fans and judges alike in the WGI World Class. They've also previously had many opportunities to participate in big-screen projects including appearances in Austin Powers, The Other Sister, and American Pie: Band Camp (according to their website). The article "Michel Gondry on his colorful video for Mia Doi Todd's 'Open Your Heart' and more: The Music Mix interview" was written by Simon Vozick-Levinson and posted on EW.com yesterday, February 2, 2010. The video director discusses having an idea in his mind and finding a way to bring that idea to the screen. The members of the RCC marching band are featured, not with instruments, but with colorful shirts, creating a series of color shifts against the stark background of the concrete of the city. The article also features the embedded music video so you can see singer Mia Doi Todd and the RCC marching band members in action performing to her song, "Open Your Heart." Check it out and check out their website to find out more about this exciting marching organization! |

THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our poll for January! We had an even 60 respondents in last month's poll which asked, "How Many Performances will your guard have this Winter?" The bulk of the responses fell between 4 and 10 performances (63%) with more than half of those having more than 7 performances this winter. Five respondents indicated there would be no performances this winter and at the other end of the spectrum 2 respondents indicated their guards would perform over 16 times! WOW!
Thank you to everyone who took the time to let us know a little more about your programs!
This month's poll is up on the main page (look for the blue box on the right side of the screen!). This month we want to know, "For a 3 hour rehearsal, how much time would you devote, per practice, to basics in February?" This is assuming you have practices in February! So this one's for all you winter guard coaches out there. If you were holding a 3 hour rehearsal, how much of it would you spend on basics block or across-the-floors skill-building vs. working on the show choreography?
Please stop by to leave your answer. You don't have to be registered for the site to respond, nor do you have to leave any identifying information. You just click the answer that fits your situation the best - it's easy and anonymous! And if you'd like to see the results of past polls just click the results button at the bottom of the poll box and it'll take you to the page with this month's running tally and a drop down menu box so you can look back through the old polls. |
